A distressing case emerged from a residence in Suk Sawat subdistrict, Phrai Bueng district, Sisaket province, as a worker claimed negligence following a severe accident.

The incident involved a 55 year old man, Somboon, who is now bedridden and requires oxygen support after being crushed by a crane basket during a demolition job. The employer allegedly offered minimal financial assistance and has since disappeared.

The accident occurred on April 17 last year at a row house behind a market in Wang Chan district, Rayong province. Somboon and his wife, Liang, who usually work as rubber tappers, were hired by their employer, A (a pseudonym), to help dismantle the row house for a daily wage of 400 baht (US$12).

The first day passed without incident but on the second day an accident unfolded when a crane cable snapped, causing the basket to fall and severely injure Somboon.

Doctors reported that Somboon suffered three fractured neck vertebrae, compressing his nerves, and he required surgery. Although the surgery was performed, his condition remains critical, demanding constant care and significant medical expenses.

Liang, Somboon’s 53 year old wife, explained that she has had to economise on their daily needs, even altering her husband’s diet from liquid food to blended rice due to high costs.

Liang expressed frustration over the lack of support, stating that they received only 20,000 baht (US$580) from the employer, who has since evaded further contact. Over the past year, any attempts to reach the employer have been met with excuses.

To cover expenses, Liang has resorted to using savings and selling her gold necklace but she is now at a financial impasse as costs mount to over 20,000 baht monthly for medicine, hospital visits, and oxygen tank changes, reported KhaoSod.

In appealing to the media today, April 8, Liang hopes to reach the employer and call for accountability, while also seeking assistance from any benevolent people who might offer support. Her husband’s condition remains precarious, reliant on oxygen and unable to move independently.
