サクラ大戦 活動写真
Directed by Mitsuru Hongo
Synopsis
Following in the aftermath of a terrible Demon-Human war, turn of the century Japan is preparing a new fighting force in case the demons decide to return. A squadron of giant robots are built to be controlled by the spirit of the pilot, but it is discovered that the only people with sufficient spirit are young women. After recruiting a team of youths from around the world, the Japanese government decides to keep them a secret by disguising them as a theater troupe, thus requiring them to spend as much time memorizing Shakespeare as they do on military training.

“Can we put our trust into all of these young girls?”
So I watched this in prep for a video I’m doing for the new Sakura Warsgame that came out about a month ago. And let me tell you, this shit is slooooooooow.
It follows the characters of the original games, but a lot of those characters show up in the new one so it wasn’t too hard to follow. But the story and the stakes are so minor, that it wouldn’t be hard to follow anyways. It’s so fucking boring and basic, more for fan service of the series than anything. Makes me wonder how hard it’d be to be a fan of the series in general since most…

If you are watching this film with no knowledge of the series and the characters beforehand there is likely no possible way that you will walk out liking this film. I enjoy all of the characters and it was nice seeing them all shine with higher budget quality. Of course the protagonist Ogami is currently In France so all you will hear very little of him. Localization changed some names which I was not a fan of but I can deal with it. Quality of voice acting is of its era. Kohei tanaka did great with this films music and the end credits theme is still very good. But back to the characters this film is the introduction of Ratchet…

Review by Alicia Haddick ★★
Fails to capture the charm of the series when muddling animation, poor overlayed CG and an uninteresting story dominate. Without engaging antagonists, the story somewhat lulls through its action from beginning to end. At least the dynamics of our main cast retain the charm of the games.
Always liked how distinct and sharp a lot of character designs from the 90s and 2000s are, so at least that part doesn’t disappoint

last ten minutes are cool
and there's small flourishes of creativity throughoutbut i dont know how the 15 sakura wars fans put up with the flagship mechanical designs of their sega saturn franchise
not very compelling

Review by Christa Lee ★★
The hand-drawn animation is gorgeous here but this is still trying to hit that "evangelion also-ran" tone that the TV anime strives for, and it's really tiresome in a property about the Steampunk Mech Takarazuka. The CGI (which overwhelms every fight scene) is tedious and embarrassing. I love Sakura Taisen to bits but it is overwhelmingly mid, and so when it is bad there is very little room for leeway before it just becomes unwatchable. The extended theatre sequence at the end is a joy though, Sakura Taisen is at its best when it takes the theatre stuff Deadly Serious
