Thomas Gene Powell
May 16, 1932 – July 30, 2023
It is with deep sadness and profound reverence that we bid farewell to Thomas Gene Powell, a man whose life exemplified unwavering dedication to his family, community, and the noble pursuit of farming. Tom was born on May 16, 1932, to Addie Francis (Byers) Powell and Llyod Glendon Powell in Hume Township, North Dakota. He was called home to rest on July 30th, 2023, at his home in Bowman, leaving behind a legacy that will forever be cherished by those who were fortunate to know him.
From his early years, Tom demonstrated a remarkable commitment to his education. He attended Byers School for his grade school education, graduating from New England Public High School in 1949, having shown exceptional academic prowess by skipping a grade and achieving early graduation. His pursuit of higher education led him to Dickinson State College, where he attended until the fall semester of 1954. However, destiny had other plans for Tom, and he chose to take up the responsibility of managing the family farm upon the untimely death of his father.
He met the love of his life, Eileen (Hansen), at a dance at the Flagstone in 1959. After two years of courtship, they exchanged vows at the Congregational Church of New England on December 2nd, 1961, and their marriage flourished for an impressive 61 ½ years. To this union, they added two children, Janell Kay Powell in 1966 and Daniel Thomas Powell in 1968. Tom's love for his family knew no bounds, and he was a beacon of affection and support to his loved ones.
As a loving father and doting grandfather, Tom reveled in every moment spent with his family. He actively participated in and ardently followed their activities, attending as many events as possible. For him, spending time with his children andgrandchildren was truly the epitome of joy and fulfillment.
Tom embraced the agricultural path with a fervent passion, dedicating his life to farming, a pursuit that would define him and become the cornerstone of his existence. During the early years of his farming journey, he, alongside his brother and best friend Glenn, and neighbors Howard Olson and Gordon Olson, started Powell Olson Construction, which later evolved into Powell Brothers Construction. The company played a vital role in sustaining their dreams of farming while providing opportunities for growth and progress. Later, his entrepreneurialspirit and love of agriculture also led him to become a part-owner of Scranton Grain.
Beyond farming, he was an active member of the Hume township board, exemplifying his love for his community through dedicated service. His commitment to agricultural excellence led him to become involved in organizations such as the Mandak Zero-Till Association and the Slope County Crop Improvement Board. He generously offered his time, resources, and expertise to numerous individuals and organizations. This included serving on the St. Lukes's Hospital board as a devoted trustee and a member of the Bowman Methodist Church. Additionally, he enriched his social life by being a valued member of the ELKS club, further illustrating his devotion to his community and fostering meaningful connections.
In their later years, Tom and his beloved wife, Eileen, embarked on a remarkable journey of discovery and adventure, traversing over 50 countries together. Their travels were a testament to the beauty of life's later chapters, where the pursuit of experiences and shared moments surpassed the constraints of age. They embraced every opportunity to create cherished memories and new friends in every corner of the world. As Tom's journey in this world came to a close, the memories of his travels with Eileen stand as a living testament to their love and spirit of adventure.
Thomas Gene Powell leaves behind a profound impact on all who knew him, having touched countless lives with his generosity of spirit, genuine love, and unyielding dedication. His values of God, family, and farming have been instilled in the hearts of his loved ones, inspiring them to carry forth his legacy for generations to come.
His son Dan, and grandson Adam, epitomizing Tom's work ethic, grit, and passion, carry on his legacy of the Powell Family Farm. As we bid farewell to this remarkable man, we hold dear the cherished memories and the profound lessons he shared with us. May his soul find eternal peace in the embrace of our Heavenly Father.
